Oh man, I have to come up with more goals? Don't I already do that almost everyday of the week? And didn't I just kick butt with my 2012 goals? Okay, so maybe coming up with some new things to strive for may not be a bad idea. Here are some things I would like to accomplish in 2013.
Read
This is a goal I still need to keep on doing. I did better in 2012, but I can do even better. My goal to read at least a chapter or short story every single day.
Write
This I have been doing pretty good in, but I'm putting it down as a goal to remind myself not to become a slacker. I must write everyday!!!!

2012 in Review: How did I do?
I can't believe it's the end of yet another year, and what a great year it has been! I will always look at 2012 as the year that I really became a writer. I wrote more this year than I have since I started dabbling in writing six years ago. I also found an incredible story that will take many books to tell, and I found a really close group of writers to work with in the critique group I started at the beginning of 2012. I also did pretty good at keeping to my goals that I set for myself at the beginning of 2012.

My December Goals
Well, my goals for the month of November didn't get reached, but I came pretty close, especially considering I had to take about 2 weeks off due to different things coming up. I managed to get the first draft of Part 2 of my novel (chapters 18-27) done and I've gotten started on Part 3 and completed chapters 28 and 29. Since I wasn't able to commit the full month to my goals, I've decided to extend them into the month of December. My new goals will be...
I think my goals are doable, and I can't wait to see what the months of December will bring! So what are your goals for this last month of the year?
- Finish rough and first draft of Part 3 (chapters 30-42)
- Work on a short story connected to my novel for an anthology due in Janurary

Goals in 2012
It’s January 1st once again and like the years
before I want to reassess my goals and where I would like to go on my writing
journey. After a Year in Review, I have come up with some things I want to accomplish in 2012 to
better the craft of my writing.
Read
The best way to get better at any craft is to study those
who have gone before in the field you wish to know about. So if you want to learn
to write what better way than by reading what others have written? Reading
something every day is my goal, even if it’s as simple as a blog post.
Write
How can a person get better at something when you don’t
practice? You can’t, so that’s my next goal to write every day. A good friend
of mine once told me that it takes approximately 10,000 hours working at
something to really be good at it. Looks like I’ve got a ways to go. My plan is
to put a decent sized dent in that 10,000 hour mark.

A Year in Review
It's actually a good thing that we have a built in system that insists that a person take stock in the past year and give thought to the coming year. I suppose the infamous January 1st isn't the only date that does this. Birthdays tend to have this effect on us too, especially the big 30, 40 and 50. It's these times of reflection and reassessment that help us understand what we've done and what still needs to be done. It forces us to take a hard look at ourselves and redefine our goals. So this is my attempt at taking a look back into the year to see what I have accomplished (or not accomplished) and where I should go from here.

Are Deadlines Hurtful or Helpful to the Writing Process?
I have always been in the belief that goals are important,
keeping a person focused on what needs to be done and usually giving a time-frame
for when said project needs to be completed. It keeps us from running around in
circles and gives us purpose. In a sense deadlines are the same, but on a
smaller scale. Deadlines are usually for very specific projects and have a
definite timeline. It’s a strict date to work towards and a feeling of doom if
said project is not completed by the expected date. Deadlines too can be helpful
in motivating a procrastinating body (such as myself) to keep moving forward
and having a sense of accomplishment from completed deadlines, but what if this
strict process creates a pressure that stifles the creative spark?

NaNoWriMo: An Alternative Challenge
It's almost that time again. November is just around the corner,
which means it's NaNoWriMo again. Are you ready to pump out 50,000 words
in 30 days? It's a great way to work on that novel or novella you've
been putting off. It's a great challenge to see what you are made of and how far you can push yourself. I did the challenge in 2009
and managed to complete 50,000 words with two days to spare! It was fun,
exciting, as well as, an eye-opener of my limitations and capabilities as a writer (when I started it, I really didn't think I would be able to make the 50,000 word goal, but I pushed through anyways). It
taught me how to write without the inner editor, the creative benefits
of writing everyday, how to organize my life so that I could write
everyday and that I could push myself to reach any goal if I wanted it
bad enough. It also taught me how exhausting writing 50,000 words in a
month is and that I really don't need to do that again any time soon.
One time was enough, but I highly recommend the challenge if you have not
tried it before. If you want to learn more about the official NaNoWriMo
check it out here.

Writing Tips for the New Year
In the last few months, I have dedicated a portion of my time to reading more about writing and looking at different things I can do to be a better writer. The following are things I found that have made a big impression on me on my journey of discovery, and wanted to share them with any who might share the same love of writing that I do. Enjoy!
Read, read, read
Reading is the fastest and best way for a writer to become better at his or her craft. I once heard somewhere that a truly avid writer is always in the middle of reading a book and will never be caught saying, “Um… well, I’m between books right now.” Read everything and anything, but mostly read books that are written by writers for writers. Below are a list of books that I have recently acquired that I have found to be treasure troves of information.

The Excuse
Yeah, it's that guilty pleasure that we indulge in way too often called the excuse. It's another way to procrastinate and to tell ourselves it's alright to put something off. I'm exceptionally guilty of this particular offense. If there is an excuse in the book, I've used it and this couldn't be more true than with my writing.
We discussed the issue of 'painful writing' today at my writer's meeting. Some people don't seem to have this problem, but for the rest of us out there who do... well you know what I'm talking about. It's sitting at the laptop and feeling it building as soon as you fire the device up. The worst of it hits full force as soon as the document file opens up. Black and white text stares back mocking you, but you suddenly remember something you forgot to do that just has to be done right that moment, so what do you do? That's right, you jump up to go do it real quick and then conveniently forget that you'd actually intended to get some writing done that day. Yeah, you feel smug because you got so much accomplished for the day, except for the one thing that you really want to do... to write.

Writing Contests
Writing is something I enjoy immensely, but feel I still have a a lot to learn about it. For this reason, I am always trying to find new ways to challenge myself in this area. So I have setup goals to make this happen. One part of my goals is to learn to do better in reaching deadlines, and what better way to accomplish this than to participate in writing contests.
